A degree will be a requirement for Parliament

A law will be implemented, requiring those vying for positions as members of Parliament and members of the county assembly, to have a university degree. This will take effect by the time the 2022 general election is held.

This requirement will dash the hopes of hundreds of aspirants, whose plans to acquire their qualifications have been derailed by Covid-19. Members of the National Assembly, in 2017, amended section 22 of the Election Act, that prescribes minimum academic qualifications for lawmakers at both levels of government. The amendment requires that MPs and members of the county assembly have a minimum qualification of a bachelor’s degree.
