Mathew Bukenya passes away at 90, leaving legacy of excellence

Mathew Bukenya, the former executive secretary of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), has sadly passed away at the age of 90. UNEB confirmed the news in a brief post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing deep sadness over his passing.

The examinations board acknowledged Bukenya’s invaluable guidance and mentorship, emphasizing the impact of his leadership and the lessons he imparted. His legacy will forever shine bright in the hearts and minds of those at UNEB.

A distinguished Career in Education and Examination

Mathew Bukenya took over as the chief examiner of UNEB in April 1995, becoming the longest-serving individual in this position. His appointment followed the removal of David Ongom, who had faced criticism due to the leakage of primary and secondary examination papers.

Bukenya, initially serving in an acting capacity, was formally appointed on January 6, 2003. He dedicated 17 years to running the national examinations board, leaving an indelible mark on the institution.

Contributions to Restoring Credibility in Examinations

Bukenya’s involvement with UNEB began long before his tenure as chief examiner. He had previously worked as an accountant within the organization and retired after reaching the age of 60.

However, in 1997, President Museveni personally called upon him to return from retirement and assist in restoring the credibility of the examinations system.

Bukenya’s name became synonymous with national examinations, and he played a crucial role in upholding the integrity of the institution

Retirement and Lasting Impact

After his dedicated service, Mathew Bukenya retired for the second time on March 31, 2016. Throughout his career, he exemplified excellence and left a lasting impact on the field of education and examinations in Uganda.

His commitment to maintaining the highest standards and his unwavering dedication to his work will be remembered by those who had the privilege of working with him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
