Ex-Arsenal defender admits Gunners always feared playing Chelsea
Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has sensationally conceded the Gunners feared playing Chelsea and other top teams during his time at the club. Sagna spent seven years at the Emirates, having joined Arsenal in 2007 before he dumped the club in 2014 for rivals Man City.
But despite often making the top four during Sagna’s stay at the club, Arsenal were seldom title challengers as Man United, City and Chelsea dominated the scene. And according to the former France international, the Gunners always viewed the Blues as a superior team as they lacked self-confidence and often under evaluated themselves. “I believe we under-evaluated ourselves. Playing for Chelsea image-wise was something different,” Sagna told the Gunners’ In Lockdown Podcast.
After more than 280 appearances for the north London club, the 37-year-old swapped Arsenal for Man City in search for more silverwares. His last match against Chelsea while with the Arsene Wenger side was a 6-0 hammering at Stamford Bridge.
