Strengthening cybersecurity in Uganda Experts address rising threats

Experts are raising alarms about the growing threat of cybercrime in Uganda, urging the population to stay vigilant. Emmanuel Chagara, CEO of Milima Security, highlighted the economic repercussions of cybercrimes in Uganda, emphasizing the financial losses incurred annually, especially within the financial sector.

Chagara pointed out the vulnerability of Uganda’s digital financial services, citing a report by the Bank of Uganda that revealed the prevalence of digital fraud in mobile banking and electronic transactions.

Improving cybersecurity measures

Despite some progress in policies and regulations, experts emphasized the need for enhanced incident response, legal frameworks, and public awareness to bolster cybersecurity in Uganda.

In efforts to raise awareness, experts will conduct a month-long campaign in October to educate Ugandans on cybersecurity best practices and mitigate the risks of cyber threats and attacks.

Martin Karungi from NITA-U stressed the importance of data protection, especially in an era where personal devices are increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Cybersecurity concerns for vulnerable groups

Noeline Nassuuna highlighted the heightened cyber threats faced by human rights defenders and activists, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support for these vulnerable groups.

Henry Mpindi from the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda noted the surge in cyber attacks following the digitalization of institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in significant financial losses.

Throughout October, activities will be conducted to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap, engage women in cybersecurity, provide cybersecurity programs for financial institutions, and culminate in a conference at the National ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa on October 31st.
