The 28-year ,Emiliano Martinez spent 10 years at the Arsenal and played only 39 first-team matches for the Gunners in all competitions, including 23 in the 2019-20 campaign when he filled in for the injured Bernd Leno.
He helped Mikel Arteta’s side finish eighth in the league and lift its 14th FA Cup trophy last month as it defeated Chelsea 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium. He also helped the Gunners to win their 16th FA Community Sheild against Liverpool after one-one draw before Arsenal won in the 5-1 in the Penalty shootouts before the 2020/21 Premier League Season Kicked Off.
“We’re really pleased with the signing of our new goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez,” Villa manager Dean Smith said.
The Argentine shot-stopper had loan spells at Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Getafe and Reading.
“We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning top side,” Smith continued.
“We moved for Emiliano Martinez when we saw the opportunity, as it is rare to be able to buy a top class goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached their peak age and who can therefore be a key player for our club for the long term,” he added.
Thank you, thank you for all of the years (of support),” Emiliano Martinez told Arsenal.com. “I thank God for having the opportunity over the past few months to show the Arsenal fanbase what I am made of, and why I went on loan so many times.
“It was always to come back and win them trophies and give them silverware. I did it, I feel prouder than ever.
“They made me as a goalkeeper; not just the club, not just my goalkeeping coaches but the fans as well because they supported me, gave me the confidence to perform as well and I wish them all the best and hope they win many, many trophies. Thank you. That’s all I can say.”
Villa, which finished 17th last season, begins its 2020-21 league campaign by hosting Sheffield United on Monday.
