Police locked scores of supporters outside Kakyeeka stadium
Police in Mbarara on Saturday moved in to contain scores of supporters of Presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine who had defied police guidelines to infiltrate Kakyeeka stadium where the event was ongoing.
Although the NUP leaders led by presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) were not interrupted, police only dispersed NUP supporters who were seated the in stadium pavilion following the proceedings.
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, police on Friday told Bobi Wine to have a maximum of 70 people at the launch and refrain from holding any processions.
Despite the police warnings, Bobi Wine and his supporters made a processions until they reached Kakyeeka.
Scores of these were locked out of the stadium and resorted to follow the event from the fence. However, moments later, a number of them started jumping the fense and dashing toward the pavilion.
This prompted Police to come in and disperse those that had sneaked in, forcing them out.
May of the NUP officials were heard complaining on why only a handful of people were allowed inside such a vast stadium.
Speaking at the event, NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya accused security forces of playing double standards saying that police is using COVID-19 as an excuse to curtail NUP presence in Mbarara.
“People are in markets crowded. Do you want to tell me that Coronavirus only surfaces when NUP is in Mbarara?” He asked.
Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson said NUP was “firm” in Mbarara.
“It can only be God that NUP is firm in an area where Mr Tibuhaburwa (Museveni) has always felt proud of,” said Ssenyonyi.
