South Africa ’s Absa PSL set to resume in August
Football is set to resume in South Africa after football officials in the country voted to restart the Absa Premiership in the continent on August 11, 2020 after it was suspended in March due to the corona virus pandemic.
South Africa’s increased Covid-19 patients and death rates had given birth to fear that activities such as football which were halted by the government will not resume. Therefore, the expectations were high that the 2019/20 season was to be ended prematurely.
An official who took part in the online decision-making meeting which took place Monday July 27, said that the 2019/2020 campaign would begin on August 11 and conclude September 5.
The remaining 54 league matches of the South African premier Division will be played behind closed doors in the central Gauteng province, whose main cities are Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Before the league resumes on August 11, the South African Nedbank (FA) Cup semi-finals between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits and Baroka and Bloemfontein Celtic will be played three days earlier.
Kaizer Chiefs, winners of a record 53 domestic titles but seeking a first trophy in five seasons, are the league leaders with a four-point advantage over Mamelodi Sundowns.
