NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi denounces human rights violation, sparks national debate

Posted on

National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has publicly criticized a disturbing violation of human rights involving the abduction of party member Achileo Kivumbi.

In a recent X post, Kyagulanyi voiced his outrage over the handling of Kivumbi’s case, portraying it as a reflection of the regime’s fear of dissent.

Kyagulanyi revealed that Kivumbi was taken on August 1, 2024, only to reappear two days later wearing military insignia, including Lt. Col. pips, suggesting a coerced and pre-planned event.

The NUP leader condemned this act as “shameless” and “thoughtless,” highlighting the authorities’ underlying insecurity and desperation.

Within a broader context of perceived political oppression, Robert Kyagulanyi linked the incident to a pattern of human rights violations, portraying the government as “timid and scared of the people.” He urged for resilience and resistance, emphasizing a message of solidarity by declaring, “We shall overcome.”

Kyagulanyi’s statements have reignited discussions on political repression and human rights in the nation.

While NUP supporters rally behind his plea for justice, critics question the authenticity of the allegations and their underlying motives.

Awaited response and advocacy

As the situation unfolds, attention is focused on the authorities’ forthcoming actions regarding these accusations and the potential launch of further investigations into Kivumbi’s reported abduction and military disguise.

The NUP and its allies are anticipated to persist in their pursuit of transparency and accountability amidst these grave allegations.
