Opposition politicians in Uganda should uphold peaceful governance, asserts – Nabbanja
In a recent statement, Prime Minister Nabbanja emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful and stable political environment in Uganda. While acknowledging the right to protest, she highlighted the need for opposition leaders to prioritize the well-being of the nation over orchestrating protests by redirecting the focus towards constructive dialogue and peaceful governance, she aimed to ensure that those who aspire to hold the highest office in Uganda do so with a commitment to the country’s progress.
Prime Minister Nabbanja, while addressing the media in Kampala criticised the leaders of opposition political parties united under the United Forces of Change consortium who disclosed a joint plan against inadequate service delivery in the country.
In her address, she expressed her concern over the role of opposition politicians who actively arrange protests as a means to advance their political agendas. While acknowledging the democratic right to express dissent, she emphasized the need for opposition leaders to prioritise the country’s stability and development over disruptive protests.
However Opposition leaders from the National Unity Platform (NUP), Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)-Katonga, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Democratic Party (DP), and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) initiated the demonstration plans.
They argued that it is unjust for Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit delegations to use the new and rehabilitated city roads while taxpayers grapple with poor roads in the city outskirts.
In addition to the planned demonstration, the opposition leaders announced joint prayers in Iganga District on January 22 and Lira District on January 23. These gatherings aim to seek divine intervention in their ongoing struggle against perceived governance issues and inadequate
The Prime Minister’s stance is not a denunciation of opposition politicians; it is a call for them to channel their energy and passion into constructive dialogue and progressive policies.
By doing so, they can contribute to the nation’s growth and development rather than perpetuating unrest through orchestrated protests.
